Country Music Tattle Tale: Tin Pan South Showcased Major Cross Genre Collaborations this Year

Tin Pan
Brisk temperatures outside provided a sharp contrast to the hot music inside the packed venues across Nashville on Saturday, the fifth and final night of the 23rd Annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival Presented by Regions Bank. All five nights of the world’s largest songwriter festival showcased over 350 writers – from rising tunesmiths to Grammy winners and multi-platinum artists in virtually every genre of music – in 10 of Music City’s top clubs
Highlights Saturday night included Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Steve Cropper joining Joie Scott, Jim Peterik, Danny Wells and Roger Cook at the Sutler Saloon to sing his hits “Sitting On The Dock of the Bay,” “In The Midnight Hour” and “Knock On Wood.” Sharon Vaughn (“My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys”) sang a new song she wrote with Josh Jenkins at The Listening Room Café.

Tin Pan South is known for showcasing contrast, camaraderie and collaboration, and that was underscored at the Listening Room Café late show with alternative rock singer/songwriter/producer David Hodges, traditional country singer/songwriter Paul Overstreet, “Nashville’s most badass songwriter” Travis Meadows and Grammy winning R&B producer/songwriter Brian Kennedy, who brought several guest vocalists on stage to perform hits he has written.
For the third time during last week’s Festival, sponsor Southwest Airlines surprised patrons at one venue with $100 vouchers toward future air travel. The 100 attendees at Saturday night’s Bluebird Café late show starring Kent Blazy, Dennis Matkosky, Alan Rhody and Kim Williams whooped and cheered, when the announcement was made.
Produced by Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), Tin Pan South reigns as the world’s largest all-songwriter festival. Thousands of music fans attend the event annually to hear songwriters tell stories behind hit songs they have written and perform the songs as they were originally composed. Regions Bank returned for the eighth year as the presenting sponsor of this year’s event.
Dates for next year’s Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival will be announced in the coming weeks.

Nashville Country Club: Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival draws in more crowds at shows

The Tin Pan South Festival continued shows on Wednesday night and included a CMA Songwriters series round with Pat Alger, Brandon Lay and Will Hoge at the Hard Rock Cafe.  Alger has been at the forefront of Tin Pan South, actively helping begin the largest songwriters festival. The NSAI board member remembers helping kick off the 1st festival, "...no one cares about that though," he joked to the crowd. The songwriter performed a few of his biggest hits including Garth Brooks "Unanswered Prayers," Trisha Yearwood's "Like We Never Had a Broken Heart," and many others. Brandon Lay who is new to the writing world shared some of his songs that were so familiar, you knew this singer/songwriter would be in the spotlight soon. Will Hoge also joined the group of writers, and Hoge is very well-known to the Nashville community. This writer responsible for "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" cut by Eli Young Band, is set to release another new album on April 7th (Middle of America). The soulful singer performed some of his beloved tunes, which added edge to the show.

Across town, Brett James performed with writers Caitlynn Smith, Justin Weaver, & Erik Dylan who all gave their own style and story. The packed out venue was a who's who audience with Kip Moore included in the crowd.  James is responsible for Carrie's "Jesus Take the Wheel," Brantley Gilbert's "Bottom's Up" and many more crowd pleaser hit songs.

The first night (Tuesday March 25th) kicked things off with a bang with Kacey Musgraves giving a surprising guest performance in the round with Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne & Brandy Clark at 3rd and Lindsley. At the Douglas Corner, Hillary Scott's mom Linda Davis performed in the round with husband Lang Scott, Bill Whyte and Kenny Beard.

Tonight Lady A's Hillary Scott is set to play the 9:00 pm show at the Hard Rock Cafe. Tickets are on sale at the door and many more shows in different venues will be commencing across Nashville.

Tin Pan South continues through Saturday (March 28th). You can find the schedule at www.TinPanSouth.com.
